My classroom mission statement My faith and learning statement The
ABCs of first grade at Beaverdam Christian School
I would like each student in my classroom to respect each other's differences and to see those differences as God-given. I want them to realize that God has created everyone in His own image and that all of us are a special part of His creation. We can read this in Genesis 1:27; “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” My hope is for my students to treat each other with genuine Christian love at school and to bring that love outside of the school setting to those they meet.
"In all that you do, do it to honor and glorify God" We were created to praise God. I will show my students that they can do this through their actions and their words in the classroom. Whether it is learning to read books, counting money and telling time, or spelling really big words, I want my students to do their best and do it to honor the God who created them. He is the one who has given them the abilities that they have. I will do my best to help my students find their gifts and develop them.
I grew up in South Olive which is an area north of Holland; I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I was the only babysitter in my neighborhood so I had lots of practice taking care of kids, also, I am the oldest of four children which gave me practice "being in charge". I was raised in a Christian home with wonderful parents who modeled Christ daily to my siblings and me. My two brothers, sister and I went to South Olive Christian School (which is a rival of BCS) for grades K-8. I then went to Holland Christian High School and graduated from Calvin College with a degree in Elementary Education. I also have a Masters in Reading from Grand Valley State University. I started teaching at Beaverdam Christian in the fall of 1992; I started with a combination of first and second grade. When the numbers grew, I taught only first grade and have been teaching that ever since. For a few years, when my children were younger, I taught only mornings. In 2004, I started teaching full time again. To teach at a Christian school is a dream come true, every day I can bring Christ into my classroom. We start the day with devotions and end the day with prayer. Throughout the day I am sharing God's love with my students in the curriculum I teach, the words I say, and the actions I show. Life at home keeps me busy, too! I am happily married for 18 years to Dave. We have a son, Ethan, who has been diagnosed with Asperger's and Bipolar. I have done extensive research in these areas. Through this research, I have gained a lot of knowledge which I can bring to the classroom. We also have a daughter Rylea to whom God has given a patient and forgiving personality, especially concerning her brother. God has blessed me so much and I give Him the honor and glory for all He has done!
